Drug Free Pain Relief

 Forever Young - May 2007

Spring is here at last!  After a long cold winter, we all want to get outside and enjoy the good weather.  You look at your garden and grab a shovel. Or you dust off your golf clubs and head to the golf course.

The next day you awake in agony.  Yesterday’s mild neck, back, knee or shoulder pain has become excruciating.  You may have re-activated an old back injury, tendonitis/bursitis, degenerative joint problems or an arthritic joint.

Now what?  Pop a few pills?  Maybe some aspirin, ibuprofen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID's) will do the trick.

You could be damaging your heart

“Drugs aren’t always the best treatment,” says Lucy Gilson, head of physiotherapy at LightSpeed Physiotherapy. “Drugs may do a good job of masking your pain or reducing inflammation but they are not a cure.  Even over-the-counter drugs can potentially increase your cardiovascular risk. Long term use can also affect your kidneys, liver and digestive system.  Patients with heart disease should use NSAID’s as a last resort.”

As we age, it can take longer to recover.  In addition, arthritis, old injuries or degenerative diseases may contribute to the problem. But you do not have to resort to drugs to achieve fast pain relief.

“When my pain became intolerable, I resorted to pain pills and anti-inflammatories ... I was suffering from arthritis in my neck. My doctor suggested Laser Physiotherapy.   After only a few visits I was amazed that I felt a difference.  Within a month I was pill free and at least 90% pain free.”

“After 30 years of practicing physiotherapy in hospitals around the world, I’ve finally found a better way to treat my patients,” says Lucy. “When I was researching the combination of laser therapy and physiotherapy, I found the results startling. I introduced this approach to our clinic and was surprised at how well patients recovered.”

With lasers, patients are being treated at the cellular level. Laser therapy increases circulation, lymphatic drainage and gives cells the energy they need to repair themselves.  There are over 2,000 research papers on this therapy. LightSpeed Physiotherapy is the first clinic to take this research and fully develop a combined laser therapy and physiotherapy treatment program.

“Our program allows patients with low back pain, arthritis, sports injuries, sprained ankles and knee, foot and shoulder injuries to experience rapid recovery,” explains Lucy. “Fractures heal faster. Muscle, tendon, and ligament tears also repair better and with less scar tissue. Inflammatory conditions, such as tendonitis or bursitis, also respond very well to laser therapy.”
