Low Intensity Laser Therapy for Pain Relief

It’s not a Miracle, It’s Science

Toronto Sun, January 7, 2007

Medical columnist, Dr. W. Gifford-Jones wrote recently, “The use of Low Intensity Laser Therapy (LILT) has proven to be a pain-buster alternative, and improves over 90 percent of patients.”

Lucy Gilson, physiotherapist, former Director of Physiotherapy at Credit Valley Hospital and founder of LightSpeed Physiotherapy, says “The effect on acute injuries is phenomenal - nothing compares to LILT. I’ve seen patients with whiplash, arthritis, sprains, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain and lymphedema successfully treated. We now get results that we didn’t think were possible.”

Dr. Fred Kahn, a surgeon and inventor of the BioFlex Professional Laser therapy system says, “With ‘back  problems’ laser therapy should be used as a primary therapy and should be regarded  as the treatment of choice.  Thousands of our patients would agree.”

What is Low Intensity Laser Therapy? LILT is the stimulation of cells with light to repair or regenerate them. The light is converted to biochemical energy by the body, resulting in normal cell morphology and function thereby causing symptoms to disappear.

Noted cell biologist, Dr. M. Dyson has found that cells can increase their repair rate six to eight times when exposed to certain wavelengths of light. Dr. Dyson discovered that certain white blood cells are activated by light and release a host of chemicals - including growth factors.

There are over 2,000 research papers on the effectiveness of LILT, yet this treatment remains relatively unknown by most physicians. So why isn’t this therapy recommended more often?

Bob Gilson, now President of LightSpeed Physiotherapy, has one answer. “As COO of Meditech, I had the opportunity to discuss LILT with a variety of healthcare professionals. There is a healthy skepticism with regards to new therapies. In many cases, ‘seeing is believing’ regardless of published papers.”

And Lucy has seen the results, “At LightSpeed, I’ve treated people who have tried anti-inflammatory drugs, cortisone, painkillers and even surgery without improvement. When we treated them with LILT, they got better. We have complete recovery or substantial improvement, with no side effects, in 90% of patients with whiplash, carpal tunnel, herniated or bulging discs, arthritis and other chronic conditions treated with LILT. Acute injuries such as sports, auto and work related injuries heal exceptionally fast.”

LILT is effective at treating these conditions because it helps restore normal cell function and increases circulation and lymphatic drainage, both essential processes for tissue repair.

With regards to inflammation, Dr. Dyson says it best, “Inflammation isn’t bad. It’s part of the healing process. Chronic inflammation is bad! LILT accelerates the inflammation process, resulting in faster healing.”

“We can help a lot of people.” said Lucy, “We’ve developed optimum treatment plans. Lengthy rehabilitation periods aren’t necessary; they are expensive and disruptive to people’s lives. We built a clinic that specializes in LILT and is designed to get patients better faster.”

“Lucy and I have diverse backgrounds.  I bring a technical perspective to the company.” says Bob. “While Lucy has practiced at leading hospitals around the world and brings an extensive clinical background to the clinic.

By locating in the Sheridan Centre, we are easily accessible and have free parking.  Our staff has specialized training and we have 10 BioFlex Professional systems, giving people immediate access to LILT.”

“No one wants to live with pain. Our goal is to get people better, faster.” says Lucy, “Every day we see results. It’s wonderful to see people getting their lives back!”
